Design Writer Charlotte Abrahams joins designer Claire Coles in a conversation, demystifying the process of commissioning unique wallpaper directly from the maker. Taking place at the home of one of the designer’s clients, the talk gives guests an opportunity to see one of her custom-projects.

Commissioning a unique piece direct from the maker is easier and less expensive than many people believe. This event demystifies the commissioning process and reveals what can be achieved when client and maker collaborate. The talk will be hosted by design writer Charlotte Abrahams and Claire Coles, who designs and handcrafts couture wallpaper murals and appliqué artworks from her studio in North West London. Taking place in the Holland Park home of one of the designer’s private clients, it offers guests a unique opportunity to see one her custom-made projects – ‘Tropical Garden’ - in situ. Depicting sketchy branches adorned with curious egrets, cockatoos and parrots, it is made from cut out and collaged vintage wallpapers, silk and leathers all drawn together with freehand machine embroidery on a silk wallpaper background.

During the hour long tour and conversation, Coles will explain how the commissioning process works from initial concept to final design, and the event will give guests the opportunity to ask any questions they have about commissioning work direct from a maker. Bespoke Walls: How to Commission a Wallpaper will also include a discussion of Claire’s process. She will reveal how she uses the sewing machine much as others would use a pen or pencil to intricately stitch her motifs together in a loose and fluid way. She will also discuss her inspirations and talk about the impact these modern interpretations of classic Chinoiserie wallpapers can have on a space.
