Lulu Lytle, Creative Director and Founder of Soane Britain has identified five antique dealers, all champions of their particular subject, to exhibit a selection of items at Soane, and to share their years of accumulated specialist knowledge of materials and craftsmanship in disciplines as diverse as glass, treen and lace.

Lulu Lytle founded Soane Britain 20 years ago. Her idea was to make well-designed furniture, which had the quality and longevity of antiques. She started with a road trip around Britain to find traditional craftspeople: stone-makers, blacksmiths, cabinet-makers, saddlers, upholsterers and stone carvers with whom she could work.

“Without the weekly chats I had from my late teens with the antique dealers at Portobello Market, I doubt I would have had my eyes fully opened to the true meaning of outstanding craftsmanship. Sometimes these were conversations about objects made by amateurs for their own pleasure or use;  a yew wood snuff box carved in the form of a greyhound, an inkwell made from a crab. At other times we were discussing gilt mounted, agate handled sherbet spoons commissioned from lapdiarists or silver wine coolers with elaborate monograms made by important silversmiths. The common factor in every piece was the integrity of its conception and the quality of its execution, themes entirely relevant to the celebration of exceptional making.”

Lulu Lytle and Christopher Hodsoll founded Soane Britain in 1997. Since then, Soane Britain has become defined by its exquisite handcraft, elegant proportions and deliciously English sense of the exuberant. The company designs and makes outstanding furniture, upholstery, lighting, fabrics, wallpapers and interior necessities that consistently reward the investment, adding a joyful atmosphere to any space. Every Soane Britain design is made in Britain in small workshops that excel in traditional skills, such as iron forging, chair making, precision engineering and saddlery. Soane Britain’s patterned and plain fabrics are woven and hand printed in British mills and workshops to Lulu’s own designs. Wallpapers are hand block by expert English printers. A Bespoke service in furniture, lighting, fabrics and wallpapers is also available to clients.
