Bentleys present a celebration of luggage-making skills, of craftsmanship and the beauty of leather. The exhibition explores the development of luggage from the purely practical but beautifully made leather despatch bags used by couriers in the 18th century, to the exemplary carbon-fibre Espace attaché case made by Hermès in 1987.

The legendary malettiers of 1880’s Paris are represented with fine examples of trunks made by Louis Vuitton and Goyard. Traditional luggage making by Hermès is illustrated with a rare hat box and suitcase from the 1950s, with a hidden compartment for secretly transporting jewels and banknotes. Examples of British luggage include a wet-moulded leather Norfolk Hide attaché case from the 1920s and a lightweight suitcase made by Asprey in the 1930s as a response to the burgeoning fashion for air travel.

Bentleys have specialised in vintage luggage since 1989 and their collection charts the evolution of luxury accessories for all forms of transport, from horse and carriage to steamship; from the earliest motor cars to the private jet..
