The Geffrye Museum hosts an upholstery take over from Second Sitters. The exhibition contains work from a host of UK based upholsterers who are redefining the traditional preconceived role of the upholsterer. On Saturday, Mick Sheridan leads a workshop, giving guests the opportunity to upholster and take home a milking stool using traditional materials and techniques. Supported by the Arts Council England and SCP.

The exhibition contains work from UK based upholsterers who are redefining the traditional preconceived role of the upholsterer, combining traditional craft skills with contemporary thinking. Taking the form of a physical timeline the exhibition maps the changes and developments within upholstery to include techniques, materials and stories. Works will be multi disciplinary, from furniture, to photography, to film, tackling activism, social commentary, materiality and the throwaway culture.

Live workshops will run alongside the main exhibition. On given days, featured upholsterers including SCP's upholstery factory Coakley & Cox Ltd will work on an identical SCP chair frame. These demonstrations are sponsored by SCP. Workshops also include Welsh stool upholstery with Mick Sheridan and chair caning with Rachael South.

Workshop: Saturday 6 May, 10am - 5pm. Traditional upholstery with Mick Sheridan. An opportunity to make and take home a milking stool using traditional materials and techniques. Each stool is handmade using reclaimed ash and will be finished using a selection of Welsh woollen fabric from Melin Tregwynt. The workshop is designed for beginners. Spaces available: 8

Demonstration: Saturday 6 May, morning. SCP's upholstery factory Coakley & Cox Ltd and Second Sitters upholster identical chair frames from the SCP collection. Completed chairs will be on display for the remainder of the exhibition.

Second Sitters and the Geffrye Museum will also be hosting evening panel discussions with makers and industry professionals. Please see the Geffrye Museum website for further information.
