Visit Shapero Modern to explore their rare books, as well as an exhibition of porcelain maps by Loraine Rutt, and see a demonstration of the intricate making of ceramic globes.

Cartographer and ceramicist Loraine Rutt founded The Little Globe Co combining her skills to create unique palm-sized porcelain globes. Encased in bespoke made oak cases and lined with hand painted celestial charts, the globes are an homage to the 18th century Pocket Globes that delighted in exploration and world discovery.  These contemporary globes are based on accurate survey data – working from a series of precise models and moulds – and each topographically correct globe is individually scribed with the outlines of continents, lines of longitude and latitude and can be personalised to depict round the world voyages and memorable places.

“We have the technology now to see the earth in its place in the universe – we can look at it from space. My globes are about recognising that we’ve got a tiny, precious gem of a planet.”

Shapero Modern are hosting Landmarks – a solo exhibition of globes and commissioned ceramic wall reliefs. With a focus on connecting to natural topography, the works use contemporary data and reference historic cartographers, to explore how maps are now integrated into our everyday communication.
