Woodcarving at City & Guilds of London Art School with Master Carvers from Tokyo University of the Arts
In their first visit to the UK, master woodcarvers and conservators from Tokyo University of the Arts’ Historic Sculpture Conservation Lab, Professor Yabuuchi Satoshi, Dr Kojima Hisanori and Lee Pin-Yi, show images and objects alongside a demonstration of Japanese woodcarving.
The trio are leading specialists in the research, analysis, conservation and historic reconstruction of Buddhist carvings from the Nara to Edo periods, working with Japan’s museums and collections as well as historic Buddhist temples on important conservation projects as well as new commissions.
Visitors are able to view presentations of their exceptional craft skills, images and carved objects, along with demonstrations of Japanese woodcarving. This visit was organised by the Art School’s Historic Carving and Conservation Departments and is funded by the Daiwa Anglo Japanese Foundation and the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation.
