David Mellor

David Mellor RDI was a key figure in British design with an international reputation as a craftsman, designer, manufacturer and also a retailer. Born in Sheffield – a historic centre for metalwork - he originally trained as a silversmith. He always specialised in metalwork and is particularly famous for his cutlery which won countless design awards and which is in many international collections. David Mellor cutlery is manufactured by a small team of highly skilled craftspeople in a purpose-designed modern factory in the Peak District National Park. Mellor's approach to all aspects of his work was always that of a craftsman, in his close involvement in materials and techniques and his insistence on the highest standards of environment and working conditions. As well as the famous David Mellor cutlery his shops have always championed exceptional functional craft pieces and carefully selected examples tableware and kitchenware designs from around the world. David Mellor retired in 2005 and passed away in 2009. His son Corin Mellor, an interior and product designer, succeeded his father as Creative Director of David Mellor Design and is responsible for product development within the company. "Having trained as a silversmith, I tend to think of myself primarily as a maker. My work as an industrial designer, developing prototypes for quantity production, has been balanced by my work as a craftsman, making special one-off pieces of silver. My approach to design is still, to some extent, that of a craftsman, in my involvement in directing all the detail and in making a design concept work from end to end." David Mellor, 1984.
