Peter Layton has been at the forefront of British Studio Glass since discovering this ‘new’ and exciting art form while teaching Ceramics in the USA during the late 1960’s. Such is his commitment to the craft, that he has devoted a great deal of his time to promoting the medium and nurturing others – helping to develop the skills of future generations by providing a truly unique environment in the creative hub that is London Glassblowing. In the last 40 years scores of talented glassmakers have worked with him to produce extraordinary collaborative and individual works of glass art.
The author of several books, he was a founder member of British Artists in Glass; initiated the establishment of the Contemporary Glass Society; helped create the Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers Award at the British Glass Biennale; sat on the board of the International Glass Art Society and represented the UK at glass symposia all over the world. He has received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Bradford for his contribution to arts and crafts in Britain.
