Reuse & Reconstruct – Textile Art with Sunspel
Sunspel hosts a Q&A with textile artist Katherine May about their collaborative project, creating textile art from Sunspel’s iconic English jersey. The evening will involve a discussion on the process of reconstructing leftover fabrics using quilting techniques to produce textile art.
Established in 1860 Sunspel has been making exceptional quality clothing for over 150 year and is renowned for its iconic English cotton jersey that is still knitted and dyed locally in Leicester. Textile artist Katherine May visited their midlands factory to make a selection of their fabric to craft an inspired wall hanging to be displayed during London Craft Week in their Chiltern Street store.
Katherine is an artist, designer and researcher who traces the threads that weave together textiles and society. Underpinned by social and cultural contexts of garments and textiles, she works with processes of collecting, gathering and archiving to make textiles, colours, catalogs and site based gatherings. With her acts of gathering Katherine makes space for conversations that question prevailing processes of value production. She is represented by the New Craftsmen.
