Leah Jensen at The New Craftsmen
The New Craftsmen presents the first solo exhibition of ceramicist Leah Jensen, who has created six new vessels for the exhibition, showcasing her innovative technique of pinning and carving geometric patterns informed by Renaissance paintings. Join The New Craftsman’s private view for the first day of the show or attend the exhibition throughout the week.
Jensen’s process originated in her response to a project exploring China during university, when she became fascinated by the intricate patterns of porcelain in the works she was studying. She went on to carve these patterns into clay, inspired by their strong geometric structure. Jensen then turned to the long-standing relationship between mathematics and art, focusing specifically on Renaissance painting, her favourite period. The series includes six finished vessels, as well as two ‘in process’ that illustrate her making technique, in porcelain, stoneware and, for the first time, terracotta. The porcelain pieces in the series are combined with burnt wood bottoms, creating a subtle feeling of unease through the juxtaposition of dirty and clean, rough and refined.
‘On Show’ is an occasional series of solo exhibitions at The New Craftsmen, encouraging makers to create a new body of collectible work that pushes the boundaries of their craft and skills.
