“Tapestry is traditionally a planned and structured craft. Life-size cartoons are drawn up, the loom is prepared and weft colours mapped out all before weaving begins. In many cases, the tapestry itself is designed to recreate a painting or photograph as accurately as possible, leaving little room for improvisation or serendipity.”

In Christabel Balfour’s “Knot Drawing” series, she explores what happens when the tapestry is allowed to evolve without much planning or forethought. Sometimes the design becomes a symmetrical pattern, or sometimes it goes for a wander over the warp.

In both cases, Christabel is never quite sure how the finished piece will turn out. Rather than being a planned process with a predetermined outcome, she allows herself to respond to the twists and turns of the warp and weft, and leaving space to be surprised.

For London Craft Week Christabel is displaying two of her latest tapestries at Cubitts Coal Drops Yard. You can find out more about her work and studio process at christabelbalfour.com or follow her on Instagram at @christabelbalfour.
