An Historical Journey with Sarawak’s Lady Brooke and Keringkam

About

Take a journey through time with the historical craft of keringkam, gold-plated embroidery on Indian rubia fabric that is found in the Malaysian state of Sarawak.

Keringkam was the craft that led Margaret, Lady Brooke, the then Ranee, or Queen Consort of the second White Rajah of Sarawak to immerse herself in the local Malay community. Through her interest in its making and its use as ornament, Lady Brooke acquainted herself with its community of embroiderers, thereby elevating and preserving this craft. It is now considered a symbol of unity to the people of Sarawak.

Discover the history and cultural significance of Sarawak keringkam to its people with workshops led by the Brooke Trust. Each workshop will also feature a live demonstration by Ros Salleh, a master keringkam craftswoman from CENTEXS Sarawak.
