Bespoke objects and experiences hold greater appeal than ever in our post-consumer world, yet the process of commissioning a one-off piece remains a mystery. Most makers agree they are only as good as the client and their brief, but what makes a good client?
Launched in spring 2022, Be-Spoke is a podcast telling the stories behind the commissioning of bespoke objects or experiences, from a new home to a tailor-made suit or unique perfume. It explores why people commission certain objects and experiences, how they engage with a maker, and what to expect along the way.
For London Craft Week 2022, Be-Spoke presents a live panel discussion featuring gallerist Shiro Muchiri; Maria Cheung, Head of Interiors, Squire and Partners and Kate Maestri, London based architectural glass artist. Together with series host Adriana Paice Kent of Woven Spaces, they consider different aspects of, and approaches to, the commissioning process.
The podcast hosts makers, clients and brokers in conversations exploring their experience of working together – the good, the bad and the lessons learnt. Each episode delves into the commissioning of a specific piece, highlighting the lasting relationship forged in the encounter.
Guests come from diverse crafts and industries, from jewellers and furniture makers to perfumers and architects; graphic designers and composers to portrait painters and landscape designers; milliners and shoemakers to chefs and florists. The aim is to inspire more people to engage with the vital art of commissioning, to experience the pleasure and excitement of working with an expert creative mind to fashion something unique.
The event is being recorded at SoShiro, a 360°cultural hub founded on the principles of conversation and collaboration. Celebrating the interpersonal relationships between designers, makers and commissioning patrons, SoShiro brings stories to life within a space or in the form of an artwork, installation or design piece. Ticket price includes a complimentary glass of fizz.
The edited recording will be broadcast on Wednesday 11 May, as Be-Spoke’s season finale.
