CANCELLED Traditional Ainu Wood Carving
The Daiwa Foundation hosts Rempei Mizuno, a master in traditional Ainu wood-carving techniques: a rare opportunity to see Ainu craft demonstrated outside of Japan. In the workshop, Rempei guides you in making mukkuri, a traditional Japanese plucked idiophone indigenous to the Ainu.
Despite facing discrimination in Japan, the indigenous Ainu community in Hokkaido has maintained their own culture and art. The Ainu have developed their craft through their everyday life, and it has its own unique value and beauty.
Rempei has received the Excellence Award of AINU in Japan, and has been recognised as the youngest ever traditional craftsman by the Foundation for Ainu Culture.
