CANCELLED Unveiling an Intricately Crafted Bronze Stainless Steel Stairway
An installation rising through the heart of The Gaslight, a redeveloped historic building in Fitzrovia. A presentation is given by the fabricators, architects and developer to provide insight into this unique project, where high quality craftsmanship is embedded into the fabric of the building.
Double Stone Steel Europe Ltd colours and fabricates stainless steel as specified by interior designers and architects internationally for a range of building types, including hotels, retail stores and cruise ships.
Created by architects Bureau de Change, this sculptural intervention in the lift core at The Gaslight building was inspired by the building’s Art Deco heritage and the developer’s desire to embed contemporary artisanship into the fabric of the space.
To capture the intricacy of the design, a bronze maquette was made – a 1:1 section of the two-ply geometric mesh – unveiled at the pre-developed building as part of London Craft Week in 2017 and selected for exhibition at the 2018 RA 250th Anniversary Summer Show.
An intensive, collaborative development began of the prototype into the full-scale design: a series of intricate panels, attached to the core running through the building’s full height. Attached onto this mesh at ground-floor level, a second layer of folded, pierced panels wrap around the core to form suspended steps and landing, peeling away from the underlying mesh.
This intricate, sculptural intervention in the space plays a central role within the architectural dynamic of the building. It captures the ethos of I.S.A. Holding’s approach to the development in creating well-crafted spaces through ingenious design and contemporary artisanship.
