Cecilia Charlton: Memory Garden

In the Garden Museum’s historic nave, textile artist Cecilia Charlton displays large-scale site-specific weavings, exploring flowers which hold personal relevance to her: hydrangea, peony, hollyhock and lavender. The works invite viewers to contemplate the relationship between textiles and gardening, and the deep sensitivity to growth and patience that both require.

About

Textile artist Cecilia Charlton displays large-scale site-specific weavings in the Garden Museum’s historic nave. The artworks reference flowers that have personal relevance to the artist: hydrangea, peony, hollyhock and lavender. The works invite viewers to contemplate the relationship between textiles and gardening — both practices involving deep sensitivity to another form of growth and patience, as it takes time for a garden or a weaving to take shape.

Watch Cecilia demonstrate overshot weaving and bargello embroidery every day during London Craft Week between 2pm to 4pm.

On Thursday 11 and Saturday 13 May, Cecilia is giving a short introduction to her work and inviting visitors to learn bargello techniques at a drop-in workshop, contributing to a large community-based piece of embroidery and weaving. These workshops run from 12pm to 2pm.

Please note, entry to Cecilia Charlton: Memory Garden is free of charge, but access to the Garden Museum galleries requires an additional ticket which can be purchased onsite.
