A Celebration of British Craftsmanship
In 2018, Julian Calder, renowned portrait photographer, travelled the length and breadth of the United Kingdom photographing 100 of QEST’s Alumni, revealing a wealth of skills, knowledge, respect for traditions and innovative spirit. The result, along with the stories of these extraordinarily talented craftsmen and women by Karen Bennet, is a new book, A Celebration of British Craftsmanship.
A selection of these portraits is exhibited at Pewterers’ Hall, with the craftsmen and women showcasing and demonstrating their skills. Amongst the QEST Scholars featured are Gordon W Robertson, Pewterer; Jenny Pickford, Artist Blacksmith; Manuel Mazzotti, Bookbinder and many more.
As Lord Snowdon, QEST’s Vice Patron, says in his introduction to A Celebration of British Craftsmanship: ‘Portraiture is a craft in itself and the 100 photographs by Julian Calder go far beyond capturing a likeness of the men and women they portray; they capture the soul of the craftsman…’
Julian Calder discusses his ‘craft’ during the event (4.30pm to 5.30pm), and also reveals a number of new portraits during London Craft Week.
If you are unable to attend the Open House on Thursday 9 May, copies of A Celebration of British Craftsmanship can be purchased for £60 inc P&P from www.qest.org.uk/shop
