Manipulating clay by hand is a significantly more unpredictable process than throwing clay at the potter’s wheel. The quick-drying medium demands impulsive decisions and the artist must resign to chance when they place work in the kiln and allow the flames to imbue the final colour and texture.

The exhibition showcases works by younger artists who are newer to the medium, such as Shinichi Sawada’s eccentric ceramic creatures; Seni Awa Camara’s multi-headed figures made in rural Senegal on an open fire; Myung Jin Kim’s surreal forms; and Alma Berrow’s paraphernalia of a good night; alongside works by established figures such as Fausto Melotti and Hannah Wilke. The exhibition also includes ceramics by some of the best known artists working with clay today, including Sterling Ruby, among others.

At the same time as Cracked, Tristan Hoare is delighted to be hosting the Troy Town Shop. Founded in 2014 by Aaron Angell, Troy Town Art Pottery is a ceramic workshop and ceramics hub in Hoxton which has hosted over 80 artists in residence. It also provides a home to Hoxton Gardenware, a youth-led not-for-profit enterprise producing small-batch terracotta pieces inspired by British garden pottery.

The Troy Town Shop is offering ceramics from £30 to £300 and 60% of the proceeds go to supporting Troy Town’s non-for-profit enterprises.
