About

Here Design Talks: Illuminating a practice of craft and collaboration.

It’s usual to consider a creative project from a ‘finished’ point of view, once it’s live, and out in the world.

But what about the process leading up to that point? In this series of talks, Here Design will be shining a light on its creative practice as their thinkers, writers, designers and makers host conversations with the craftspeople who have collaborated on some of their most illustrious projects to date. All talks will be followed by a Q&A and opportunity to meet the artist.

Thurs 7th October
09:30- 10.30 – The Chocolate Brik Road

Here talks confectionery architecture with chocolate engineer Raffaella Baruzzo of Brik Chocolate. Is there a craft more delicious and enticing – and underrated – than the art of chocolate sculpting? Award-winning chocolatiers specialising in edible textures and architectural surfaces, Brik Chocolate is rethinking how chocolate should be eaten and experienced. And Brik’s chocolate engineer Raffaella Baruzzo is leading the charge, working her magic for the likes of Selfridges and the Royal Academy Summer Party. Join Here Design’s creative partner Kate Marlow for a peek inside the kitchen, a chat about inspiration and collaboration, and a tasty surprise.

16:30-17:30 – Design Over Time
Here talks craft attuned to time and nature with acclaimed landscape gardener Jinny Blom. Unlike many other creative processes, garden design requires the imagination to visualise the effects of time and the complexities of the natural world. Award-winning landscape gardener Jinny Blom takes all of this and more into account when she begins visualising a garden. Join Here Design’s creative partner Mark Paton in conversation with Jinny as they discuss thoughtful and time-conscious design, what that might look like on paper and how this thinking could inform other design disciplines.
Fri 8th October
09:30 – 10:30 – The Magic of Collaboration

Here talks the community of creating with ceramic artist Clare Twomey. For ceramic artist Clare Twomey social and historical contexts are not just a point of departure for her craft but the entire framework. For the past twenty years, Clare has been creating and exhibiting immersive clay-based sculptures, both large-scale and site-specific, that touch on an innate humanity. As such, she was the ideal collaborator for our project with the RNOH Charity. Join us as Clare walks us through the thinking behind the iconic Buttercup Collection, large-scale collaboration – its practicalities and joys – and the magic of crating together, all while crafting a buttercup from scratch.

18:00 – 19:00 – An Artist’s Touch
Here talks heritage, cross-cultural connections, tactility and heart with potter Lucía Ocejo. Over the last 10 years, Here Design together with the distillery The Balvenie have carefully sought out and worked with some of the most amazing craftspeople around the world to interpret and represent a Single Malt Scotch Whisky brand that places craftsmanship at its heart. The latest in that long list of collaborators is Mexican native Lucía Ocejo. Join us as Lucía discusses heritage, tactility and the meditative quality of her creative process in conversation with Here Design’s creative partner Mark Paton while demonstrating the hands-on skill it takes to realise the complex forms of her work in ceramic.
Sat 9th October
11:30 – 12:30 – ReWeave

Here talks circular high fashion with textile designer Kirsty McDougall. When models walk down the runway, we think about the designer, the cut of the clothes, the fit. But rarely do we think of the craft that goes into thread and fabric. Enter Kirsty McDougall, designer, consultant, lecturer and successful founder of two independent textile studios. Join Here Design’s creative partner Kate Marlow as she chats sustainability and circular high fashion with Kirsty, and celebrate the launch of Kirsty’s newest venture, ReWeave. A collection of textiles crafted using recycled or repurposed materials sourced from fashion houses, ReWeave transforms waste into fabrics with taste.

15:30 – 16:30 – Scents & Meaning
Here talks the poetry of perfume, scent memory and olfactory storytelling with the Master Perfumer. To one of the world’s leading perfumers the perfect scent shouldn’t just smell good, it should tell an entire story and create a connection. But how do you interpret subjective descriptions and, on the flipside, how do you later describe that scent for the many, not just the few? Join us on an olfactory experience as Here Design’s Head of Words Francesca Tenenbaum explores the poetry of perfume and the storytelling of the senses with the Master Perfumer.
