Kuniko Maeda is a Japanese artist based in London who works mainly with paper, leather and textiles to create handmade jewellery, artworks and installations for public and private spaces.

Kuniko Maeda seeks to explore the connections between nature and humans through the use of specific materials and anthropomorphic forms. Her practice is rooted in material processes, influenced and informed by her subject specialism in sustainable textile design and Japanese traditional woodcarving. By exploring the possibility of materials and their unique properties, Kuniko allows them to speak and embraces natural formed abstraction.

She works with paper, often recycled, because of its many common uses, its easy availability and its unappreciated nature. It also has an adaptability and elasticity when set within a variety of configurations. Paper sculptures are created from discarded paper through the examination of traditional craft techniques and integration of traditional skills and modern technology. The intricate and delicate processes enable a flat sheet to morph into organic and abstract 3D structures.

Contemporary Applied Arts is thrilled to exhibit Kuniko’s latest work, which combines the reuse of materials, including paper and leather, Japanese traditional craft techniques and modern digital technology. In addition to viewing Kuniko’s work, visitors can join hands-on workshops.
