An exhibition of surprising, varied and moving memorials commissioned from contemporary lettering artists, exploring the processes and techniques of the hand carver for both individual tributes and community memorials.

Presented by the Lettering Arts Trust, How Do You Want To Be Remembered? shows how surprising, varied and moving memorials can be, from the Bali Bombing memorial to personal headstones for private individuals.

The exhibition takes place in the Geffrye Museum’s graveyard and explores the process of creating a personal memorial: the relationship that develops between the bereaved and the artist as together they explore, define and finally craft a fitting tribute that honours the individual or chronicles the collective memory of a community. The display is a rich variety of concept sketches and working drawings together with photographs that show the development process, from setting the brief to the finished, beautifully hand-cut memorial. Many people have found the process of commissioning a memorial to be a deeply rewarding and healing experience.

The Lettering Arts Trust champions excellence in the lettering arts by fostering talent, extending knowledge and facilitating new works – for memorials, architectural projects, domestic artefacts and garden sculpture.
