About
Make your own tribal beading souvenir in Sarawak’s Orang Ulu tradition.
Beading has long been an important craft to the indigenous Orang Ulu tribes of Bornean Sarawak. The subtribes such as the Kenyah and Kayan have a tradition of adorning their baby baskets with a sheet of woven beads. This is believed to offer protection to the child and each beaded sheet is decorated in motifs such as deities, dragons and the hornbill.
The same technique is also used to produce necklaces and sashes which are used as ornament.
In this workshop, learn this technique of weaving beads into small souvenirs such as earrings or a key chain.
