BOOKING INFORMATION
£0.00 – £5.98
An exploration of paper: watch paper demonstrations, discover specialist paper conservation and fine art techniques and, on Saturday 14 May, try your hand at blind printing (no ink involved). Visitors can also tour the wood and stone carving studios, cast a vote in the carving competition or join a free talk and tasting with Fabal Lager.
About
The Art School hosts a range of activities exploring the properties, uses and conservation of paper to mark the launch of its 2022–2024 research programme, ‘Material Matters: Paper’.
Paper Demonstrations
Tutors, students and Fellows run paper-related demonstrations and showcase the specialist paper conservation and fine art techniques taught on their renowned degree courses. Free, booking not necessary.
Wood and Stone Carving
The wood and stone carving studios are open and you can cast your vote in the ever-popular carving competition with current carving students. As well as watching the historic craft skills of wood and stone carving in action, have a go at stone carving yourself. Look out for more activities posted on the Art School’s website soon. Free, booking not necessary.
Printmaking Workshop
Learn the traditional process of ‘blind printing’ with the head of printmaking, Jason Hicklin, who is leading a series of short, hands-on workshops on Saturday 14 May. Blind printing is the historic intaglio printing process without the ink, so visitors leave the Art School’s historic Print Room with beautiful debossed artwork but no inky fingers! The one-hour workshops are £5 (+ booking fee) per person and booking is essential.
Talk and Tasting
On Saturday 14 May (afternoon only), join a free Talk and Tasting with Fabal Lager in the Courtyard. Refreshments are available from the café throughout the event. Free, booking not necessary.
Established in 1854, City & Guilds of London Art School has an outstanding reputation for excellence in the teaching of contemporary fine art, the conservation of cultural objects and books and paper, the historic craft skills of stone and wood carving and art and material histories.
