Phoebe Cummings in Conversation with TOAST
Join ceramic artist Phoebe Cummings in conversation with journalist Becky Sunshine as she discusses why she works exclusively with raw clay, the temporality of her work and her recent collaboration with TOAST.
Phoebe Cummings is a ceramics artist working exclusively with raw clay. Taking inspiration from the natural world, she creates beautifully detailed, site-specific sculptures – from vast, intricate landscapes to exquisitely wrought garlands of flowers. All her pieces are temporary and last only as long as each exhibition. In this way, her work defies easy categorisation, sitting somewhere between studio ceramics and performance art.
In March, TOAST worked with Phoebe to create a unique installation. Exhibited over the course of a week, viewers were able to watch as the artwork was constructed and then activated by the elements of water, heat and air. Changing subtly from day-to-day, it reflected the cycles within nature.
