About
The Royal School of Needlework and The Courtauld partner on a canvaswork hand-embroidery class inspired by a stunning floral-back chair from the museum’s Bloomsbury Room. This one-day class is held at the gallery on Friday 13 May to celebrate London Craft Week.
Students learn how to use a range of Appleton tapestry wools to create a vibrant, stylised bookmark in traditional Bloomsbury colours. RSN tutor Sarah Smith introduces students to the technique of canvaswork, used by the original embroiderers of the chair, thought to be Vanessa Bell or Winifred Gill. The design, like the original, is worked in tent stitch, with students learning how to start and finish threads, work from a chart and make up their finished project into a bookmark, with a backing fabric which is also included in the kit. Students are also able to visit the Bloomsbury Room during the day.
