Squire & Partners: Collaborative Art and Making at The Department Store, Brixton
An exclusive evening behind the scenes at The Department Store. Hear established and emerging creative collaborators in conversation with architects Squire & Partners, chaired by Grant Gibson: fashion graduate Isabel Fletcher, artist Based Upon, Pajaki maker Karolina Merska and Czech glass studio Lasvit.
When architects Squire & Partners embarked on reviving a dilapidated Edwardian department store in Brixton, they committed to allowing the existing fabric and layers of history to inform the new design. Once a grand retail destination in a thriving cultural neighbourhood, the building had fallen into disrepair. Recognising the decayed grandeur of the raw space, which revealed an extraordinary commitment to craft by the original artisans of the day, the practice sought to highlight the building’s history in its found state, and introduce a layer of contemporary interventions by a new generation of artisans.
Squire & Partners’ architecture and interior design teams reactivated the building through animation and display, involving over 50 artists and makers, both emerging and established. This event introduces four creative collaborators who made an important contribution: fashion graduate Isabel Fletcher, artist Based Upon, Pajaki maker Karolina Merska and Czech glass studio Lasvit. A presentation with exhibited works is followed by a behind-the-scenes tour, finishing with drinks at the practice’s Upstairs rooftop bar.
