It is not really the style at Vitsœ to blow trumpets and line the streets with waving flags when a new product is coming out. This is because design is an iterative process at Vitsœ. If something needs changing to improve performance, Vitsœ thinks very hard about it, design even harder, and then makes the change. Job done. This is the way the company has worked for more than 60 years and in doing so they design, make and sell furniture that lasts for generations, supported by the very best customer service.
But sometimes it is OK to toot a horn and share the thinking and process of something new, particularly when it represents a significant addition. Now is such a time, as the beloved 620 Chair Programme – designed for Vitsœ by Dieter Rams – has a new coat. A softer, linen coat, in a palette of carefully chosen colours, to sit alongside the more usual leather jacket that 620 has worn since 1962.
The covers for the 620 have always been replaceable (by customers, at home) although happily that need doesn’t often transpire. Customers who already have a leather-covered 620 or two (bought 4 or 40 years ago) can swap their covers for linen, no problem.
For such a long-lived chair, linen is an appropriate fabric. One of the oldest textiles, linen has been a fabric of significance for many centuries. Vitsœ’s linen is thermoregulating (cool in the summer and warm in the winter) and hypoallergenic. It wears incredibly well and, just as importantly, it’s extremely comfortable.
