Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler has a long history of commissioning bespoke works for clients from the United Kingdom’s finest craftspeople. Commissioned for private residential projects, such items – one-of-a-kind textiles, carpets, ceramics, furniture and lighting – have from time to time also enlivened the firm’s showrooms. The ongoing relationships established by the Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler interior designers with a wide range of skilled and talented artisans help support the UK craft industry’s precious traditions.

This exhibition for London Craft Week shows the vibrant plasterwork of Geoffrey Preston, an English architectural sculptor specialising in decorative plaster and the art of stucco. Geoffrey studied sculpture at Hornsey College of Art and subsequently apprenticed as a stonemason. He was a founding director of two of the country’s most respected conservation companies before turning his hand to the creation of fine new work. Credited by Country Life with creating ‘the most inspiring plaster decoration of modern times’, he works with a small team in his studio in Devon, making beautiful new work commissioned by architects, designers and private clients.

The Art of Plaster includes a collection of recent work with an emphasis on flower sculpture. Geoffrey has found a rich seam of inspiration in the modelling of flowers and leaves in 18th century plasterwork and their representation in other decorative arts, from the flowers of chintz textiles to the painting of Sevres and Nymphenburg porcelain. The sculptures in the exhibition explore flower forms in all their wonderful variety and are boldly and expressively modelled. The exhibition also includes objects specially created in collaboration with the Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler interior decorators. Alongside, a display of tools and materials demonstrate the processes and techniques involved, and sketchbooks and photographs show work in progress. All the works in the exhibition are for sale.
