The History of the Egg™ Chair

This celebration of the Egg™ chair explores the history, craft and design of one of the world’s most recognisable furniture pieces, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen for the SAS Royal Hotel. The exhibition includes special-edition Egg™ chairs and an embroidery and embellishment demonstration by Hand & Lock.

About

Fritz Hansen celebrates the Egg™ chair in a dedicated exhibition, combining design, craft and history to tell the story of one of the world’s most recognisable furniture pieces, and a true masterpiece of Danish design. Created in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen for the lobby and reception of his wider SAS Royal hotel scheme, the Egg™ chair is also acknowledged worldwide as one of the triumphs of Jacobsen’s legendary career.

The event explores Jacobsen’s design inspiration, the handcrafting techniques used to make each piece and its materials and finishes. See a selection of special-edition Egg™ chairs produced over the years, in collaboration with various artists, architects and designers. Today’s most recent Egg™ chair sees upholstery in exclusive fabrics created by Kvadrat in collaboration with Raf Simons and bespoke leathers from Sorensen, all with the handmaking tradition still intact.

A drop-in workshop with Hand & Lock on Wednesday 10 May includes an embroidery demonstration, revealing the techniques and materials used in this traditional embellishment method. Working with Hand & Lock and Kvadrat, a unique Egg™ chair will be created to mark the King’s Coronation. Hand & Lock has over 250 years of experience in embellishment and embroidery, representing the finest in luxury handcrafting.

A wider ‘Egg Trail’ sees the 2008 patchwork Tal R chair displayed in several London retailers for the duration of the exhibition. The Tal R was created as an edition of 50 in celebration of the chair’s 50th anniversary, working with Danish artist Tal R. Each chair is uniquely constructed from a variety of new and vintage fabrics, sourced from locations all over the world.
