The Lettering Arts Trust at City & Guilds of London Art School
About
For London Craft Week 2023, the Lettering Arts Trust will be showcasing a selection of hand carved lettering created by some of its former Journeymen who are alumni of the City & Guilds of London Art School. Having graduated in carving at CGLAS, these makers have gone on to refine and hone the specialist skill of letter cutting via dedicated training schemes funded and organised by the Lettering Arts Trust.
On Saturday 13 May there will be demonstrations of letter carving by the Lettering Arts Trust’s current journeyman, providing insight into the design, composition and the intricacies of cutting beautiful lettering.
The Lettering Arts Trust is a charity dedicated to ensuring that the heritage craft of hand-carved lettering continues to flourish. Its apprenticeships, journeyman scheme and career development programme are central in passing the skills and knowledge of the country’s finest letter cutters on to the next generation. The proceeds from its commissioning and commercial activities, together with grants from funders, make these education activities possible.
City & Guilds of London Art School is a specialist Higher Education institution and charity with an almost 170-year history of offering a valuable alternative to other models of Art & Craft education in the UK. The Art School’s BA (Hons) Carving courses are unique at this level in the UK and further afield and prepare students to work as professionals within the disciplines of wood and stone carving.
