Traditional Skills Reimagined: Sophie Coryndon at Soane Britain
Soane Britain displays a new commission by British artist Sophie Coryndon, whose intricate artworks are inspired by traditional crafts. Join Lulu Lytle in conversation with the artist as they discuss their keen interest in contemporary craftsmanship, followed by a demonstration.
In January 2019, St Peter’s Church in the heart of the South Downs National Park commissioned an altar cloth from the artist Sophie Coryndon, formerly of that Parish. Inspired by ecclesiastical gold-work embroidery and the beauty of the natural surroundings, Sophie used a myriad of techniques to create the embellished panel, on display throughout London Craft Week at Soane Britain.
As a champion of British craftsmanship and with a meticulous eye for detail, Lulu first encountered Sophie 15 years ago and has followed her work closely ever since. Lulu and Sophie discuss their shared enthusiasm for exquisite craftsmanship and explore the influences, materials and techniques that shape their work. The discussion is followed by a demonstration of the incredibly varied skills that are involved in Sophie’s exceptional craft.
During London Craft Week, Soane Britain is open Wednesday 8 - Friday 10 May.
