Tsuchikabe – Japanese Soil Plaster Demonstration
TSUCHIKABE – Japanese Soil Plaster Demonstration
About
Tutikabe is a type of soil that proposes a new way of life for skilled Japanese makers, by crossing over traditional Japanese plastering techniques, handed down from ancient times, with contemporary sensibilities and design.
Tutikabe uses natural ingredients such as local soil, straw, sand and lime to create a beautiful, sustainable material. In this demonstration, skilled plasterers will use traditional Japanese techniques to create contemporary art panels with this unique soil.
Soil making, which shows a variety of expressions depending on the mixing of materials and finishing methods, can only be done by plasterers who continue to make the work live on site.
The Japanese people’s innate sense of civility, enjoyment of change over time and aesthetics are utilised with modern technology to create these spaces that harmonise with current lifestyles, from soil making to people and town building.
