Tiipoi explores The Object and The Craft in two panel discussions, with speakers including experts from the V&A, contemporary artists, designers and architects. The Varana store also hosts an exhibition of craft items informed by contemporary design, curated by Creative Director Sujata Keshavan.

Sujata has put together a series of events, including a new exhibition of objects and furniture, to further express her vision for the integrity for Indian craft traditions, craft-based production and the handmade. The in-store exhibition, “The Varana Collective,” is a show of six cutting edge design studios working in India and will include exquisitely made objects and furniture by Case Goods, Rooshad Shroff, Sandeep Sangaru, Neeru Kumar, Tiipoi and Material Immaterial.

Additionally, Varana will host ‘Tiipoi Talks,’ an ongoing programme of talks and discussions, co-produced by Spandana Gopal (of Tiipoi) and Manijeh Verghese, with an aim to create more critical and rigorous conversation around craft-based practice within a more inclusive reading of history and the disciplinary canons that we operate in.

The store will also be housing a live craft demonstration throughout the week: The weaving of Jamdani; Threads of wind by Sayan Chanda. Inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Jamdani weavers develop a strong occupational identity and take great pride in their heritage; they enjoy social recognition and are highly respected for their skills, the impact of which is key to Varana’s core ethos. Varana has created a bespoke Jamdani fabric, woven with a signature tonal wave pattern, and this live demonstration will be a unique opportunity to see the process up close.

Varana is a luxury brand that blends together minimalism, modernity and extraordinary craftsmanship. Varana’s mission is to combine the rich artisanal skills and textile techniques of India with a contemporary design aesthetic. Combining influences from the west and the east, Varana exemplifies discreet and confident luxury through fine custom-designed fabrics, beautiful cuts and considered details.

Tiipoi is London-based design studio specialising in Indian design. Tiipoi Talks are an ongoing programme of talks curated by Manijeh Verghese (Head of Public Programme at the Architectural Association) and Spandana Gopal (Founder of Tiipoi).

The programme aims to start new conversations and encourage a deeper and more critical way of asking questions around contemporary practice by bringing together designers, artists, architects and cultural commentators with a view to debate the power of objects, craft-based practice and the role of context in shaping projects and ideas. Through a cross-pollination of different forms of practice and backgrounds, the talks hope to bring to the foreground a more rigorous dialogue around making and sharing work in a changing London.
