About
Tristan Hoare is delighted to present a solo show by world-renowned ceramist, Alev Ebüzziya Siesbye, first presented to their audiences in September 2021 as part of the Autumn group show, Cracked.
Alev has built an international reputation as a ceramist by modeling bowls. Though she is often referred to as a Minimalist, her small vessels, glazed in saturated pigments and adorned with delicate detailing around the lip, look less like modern works of art and more like ancient artifacts. The simplicity of design and perfection of proportion of Siesbye’s pieces give them a timeless quality and a surprising gravity. The seemingly simplicity of her works should not be taken lightly. It is the achievement of a life dedicated to kneading clay to the correct texture, through coiling technique, adjusting enamel recipes to obtain the perfect colour, refining curves to harmoniously balance a shape.
In 2002, “A ceramics Universe 1964-2002,” a retrospective exhibition of her works, was exhibited in the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum in Istanbul and the Danish Museum of Decorative Art in Copenhagen. She is in the collections of more than 34 major museums in the world.
