Alexandra Hewson

Alexandra (Ali) Hewson studied illustration at Camberwell College of Arts, graduating in 2013. In a deviation from her degree, Ali began working with clay, producing hand-built ceramics with a focus on gestural slip and natural oxides. Her background in sketching can be seen in the fluidity of the drawn line.

Ali’s functional objects are informed by 17th century domestic objects, along with traditional handwriting studies and repeated motifs. The resulting designs skillfully demonstrate freeform slip trailing, a technique that creates unique textural patterns. Finished using metal oxides, each ceramic bowl develops an earthy tone in the firing process, resulting in pieces that subtly catch the light.
