About
Athena Kontonikolaki studied economics and politics at the University of Reading and completed an MA in Design Studies at Central College Martins School of Art and Design.
She then worked in PR and communications, across visual arts, design, architecture, and lifestyle. She took up ceramics as a hobby in the time she took off work, when her son was a little baby; drawn to the tactility of clay, she found the medium provided a unique vocabulary, treading the line between craft work and fine art, between the utilitarian and the abstract. She has since delved into various building techniques, wheel – throwing and glaze work.
“The endlessly explorative nature of clay work presents a constant challenge and infinite possibilities. It drives an ambition to cover as many interpretations of a theme, in an everlasting play of trial and error.”
