Born in 1950, he has been designated as a national intangible cultural asset in making blinds from finely striped bamboo stems. This is a unique technique that his family has preserved for four generations. This national intangible cultural asset of Korea was born from a small seaport town, Tongyeong, known for producing the best craftsmen of Korea for centuries. Trained under his grandfather and father, Daeyong is a master at creating the traditional Korean blind made from bamboo. This is a painstaking technique requiring much patience from preparing the bamboo, split finely enough to be woven into a blind only for the highest cultural connoisseurs of Korea. The blinds are featured in the Netflix series “Kingdom”.
