About

The tribe Kavalan from Hualien, Taiwan uses fibers of domestic eatable bananas and makes them into strings, then uses the strings to weave clothes or utilities. The traditional life of Kavalan revolutionized after the completion of Huatung Highway along the Taiwan east coast. With the convenient transportation, civilization and kinds of modern utilities impact the Kavalan people and their banana weaving craftwork business. In recent years, Kavalan people determine to protect their culture, especially the traditional banana weaving skills, so LALABAN Xinshe Banana Fiber Workshop was therefore established in 2005. The workshop designs and produces its unique products and holds lessons in order to revive banana fiber craftworks. Their workshop looks forward to developing new business of the Kavalan culture as well as keeping traditional signature at the same time.
