Phoebe Cummings studied Three-Dimensional Crafts at the University of Brighton, before completing an MA in Ceramics at the Royal College of Art. She has undertaken a number of artist residencies worldwide, including six months as ceramics artist-in-residence at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Her work was acquired for the permanent collections of York Art Gallery, Southampton City Art Gallery and The Shipley in 2015 through the Contemporary Art Society’s Craft Acquisition Scheme. Cummings was awarded the second ceramics fellowship at Camden Arts Centre 2012, was the inaugural winner of the Woman’s Hour Craft Prize 2017 and was shortlisted for the Arts Foundation Awards 2018. In 2019 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Brighton and is Research Associate at the Ceramics Research Centre UK – University of Westminster.
For the opening of the JET & CO showroom in Autumn 2019, Phoebe created a wonderful performance in unfired clay entitled ‘Betray us into Delight’. The story of its creation and dismantling was perfectly timed for the original 2020 Craft Week dates. It actually proved more permanent than many things and survived lockdown surprisingly well, being eventually dismantled in July 2020.
The story of it dismantling and regeneration has moved on now and will be the subject for discussion when Phoebe visits us during Craft Week.
The charming JET & CO showroom is quite small and will always do its best to accommodate all visitors, but numbers in the showroom at any one time will be restricted. Therefore please contact them to register interest and make a priority booking for a specific time and especially if you would like to meet Phoebe herself on the day she has dedicated to us on Tuesday 6th October.
