About
Working from a small workshop in Lambeth, Vanessa Butt has expertise in both modern and traditional upholstery. A specialist in sustainable upholstery, Vanessa works on commissions to suit the design and age of the piece. The workshop became ‘foam-free’ in 2022, and natural materials are used as a priority. Vanessa designed the ‘Thought-Fill’ cushion, an alternative cushion inner for a seat box cushion in 2021 which uses coconut fibre and wool.
Vanessa grew up on a farm in Grimsby, but left after college to move south to Oxford. In 2014 she completed a certificate from the Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers (AMUSF) at Rycotewood School of Furniture.
Since then Vanessa has worked in a variety of workshops, from small garages to large factories and from Oxford to London via Bristol, before finally setting up on her own.
Since 2017, she has also been teaching the AMUSF upholstery course at London Metropolitan University.
