Yi’s lacquer works defy conventional traditions primarily through her use of bright colors, various finishes and playful ideas from which they are inspired. Most of her works celebrate her childhood memories, for example, the series of Colorful Taiwanese Toys has won her wide applause. Her current project ‘Desserts’ is a lively representation of her favorite food and a wish to make all desserts here to stay. For her delicate and cheerful works, Yi has received awards globally, including Taiwan, Japan, US and Germany.
In 2015, Yi founded her own studio in Taiwan, and defined the studio’s key concept as bringing out the playful side of lacquer art by offering DIY courses, lifestyle products, and accessories such as jewellery. The studio’s creative approach to lacquer making has built up a profile independent from Taiwan’s long succession of Japanese skills and aesthetics.
